ithaca
the work suggests an approximation of two islands acting strongly on the western imaginary; ithaca and cuba. the two islands cross and reflect each other not only visually but also through the multiple readings of the poem of constantinos kavafis "journey to ithaca" carried out by 17 persons in havana.
even today, the island of ithaca evokes the idea of "home" as nostalgia; of the fulfillment of fate and of the final return. ithaca is converted into a field of latent meanings, inhabiting the imaginary space that imposes itself on the real history of the island. during the 17th and the 18th century, the legacy of homer was revived and reemerged in the collective imaginary, constituting one of the most important paradigms for the western culture ever since. when the socialist revolution was carried out in 1959, cuba also imposed itself in a noticeable way on the imagination of the 20th century. but what is the present legacy of cuba? in what way does the island affect the contemporary imaginary? in what way do the people on the island deal today with an image charged with utopias, illusions, disillusions, that determined the social and cultural identity of its inhabitants? the poem of kavafis condenses those questions in the image of the island, an island projected in an uncertain future but also open to the projections of each reader.
